Ilham Kadri’s grandmother told her that a love of books and knowledge would be her ticket out of their Morocco homeland. It would be a way to “exit” a culture where a woman’s highest hope was for a good marriage. Turns out, grandmother Fatma, although she was illiterate and worked as a cleaning woman, knew what she was talking about. Today, Kadri manages the second-largest division of Sealed Air Corp., Diversey Care, a $2 billion segment for the company that’s building a $58 million headquarters in Charlotte.
Kadri describes Fatma as “the most emotionally intelligent person who came into my life.” “She taught me to respect books and respect knowledge,” Kadri said during a recent interview at the Sealed Air temporary headquarters in Charlotte. After high school in the north African country, Kadri left for college in France and her first degree. Kadri earned a chemical engineering degree on scholarship at Strasbourg University. She also has a master’s degree in physics and chemistry and a doctorate in chemistry.
Now it’s time for Kadri to pay it forward. Kadri helped launch the ISSA Hygieia Network, an industry group that’s working to elevate women in cleaning using networking and educational opportunities. Kadri talks about growing up in Morocco, her 13 moves around the world and her hopes for creating a new Sealed Air culture.
