About BUBBLE WRAP® Brand Protective Packaging

1945-1957-BubbleWrapMachine

In 1957, engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes set out to create textured wallpaper in Hawthorne, New Jersey and instead invented something far more impactful. By sealing two plastic shower curtains together, they created a sheet of air bubbles. The wallpaper idea failed, but the material did not. In 1960, they founded Sealed Air, and shortly after, BUBBLE WRAP® brand cushioning was used to protect IBM’s 1401 computers during shipment. It did not just solve a problem, it launched an entirely new category of protective packaging.

More than 65 years later, BUBBLE WRAP® remains the most recognized name in protective packaging, with a portfolio that extends far beyond its original design. Today, it includes pre-inflated cushioning, on-demand inflatable systems, air pillows, paper mailers, and embossed paper solutions. Across e-commerce, retail, and manufacturing, these solutions help reduce damage, improve efficiency, and support sustainability goals, backed by Sealed Air’s materials expertise, ISTA-certified testing, and decades of packaging innovation.
