5 Reasons Companies Love Retention and Suspension Packaging

When you need packaging that combines product presentation, packaging sustainability, and damage protection, it is time to talk about retention and suspension packaging.

Although these eye-catching packs were introduced more than 30 years ago, they have changed a lot over the years.

New box designs provide more durable product protection, and different films offer a range of clarity and elasticity to fit a wider range of products. Plus, new technologies make it even easier to customise the look of each pack with printed designs and laser cutting.

Whether it has been a while since you explored retention and suspension packaging, or you are just discovering the possibilities, it is time for a closer look at why companies love these options.

But first, let’s define these types of protective packaging.

What Is Retention Packaging?

Retention packaging

Retention packaging holds a product in place between corrugate and non-slip film. The film stretches across the top of the product when the corrugate’s tension flaps are folded, and the film holds the product in place.
Retention packaging is available in two formats: retention boxes and retention inserts. Retention boxes are an all-in-one solution where the corrugate and film are integrated into a single box. With retention inserts, the product is held in place by the insert, which is placed into a separate box.

What Is Suspension Packaging?

Suspension packaging

Suspension packaging holds a product in place between two layers of non-slip film, which are then placed into a box. The film cushions products from damage by acting like a spring, absorbing shock and vibration during transit.

Now that we have covered the basic points, let’s dive into five reasons companies love this protective packaging

#1

Retention and Suspension Packaging Has Unparalleled Product Presentation

The clear, non-slip film that holds products in place is also the key to product presentation. When a consumer opens the box, they immediately see the product they purchased. This leads to memorable unboxing that also enhances the customer experience, especially for consumer goods like cosmetics, smartphones and tablets.

New advances in digital die cutting, printing, and laser engraving give you the opportunity to impress customers with custom designs in smaller runs, including seasonal promotions or limited-time offers.

#2

You Can Protect Products from Damage Without Excess Materials

Damage is a leading cause of customer frustration, and it can decrease the sustainability profile of your products.

Retention packaging and suspension packaging can help prevent damage during shipping in different ways.

Retention packaging prevents products from shifting, can act as block and bracing, or provide light cushioning. Suspension packaging better absorbs shock and vibration for sensitive products. Both perform without the need for void fill or other cushioning, which helps to streamline packaging material inventory.

#3

It is Kerbside Recyclable and Ships Flat to Enhance Sustainability

Most retention and suspension packaging is kerbside recyclable for easy disposal by customers. Some options, like our Korrvu® retention and suspension packaging, also include recycled content to further enhance sustainability.

How the packaging arrives to you is also important. The corrugate and film with retention inserts, retention boxes, and suspension packaging ship flat, allowing you to take advantage of cube optimisation.

#4

Retention and Suspension Packaging Saves You Storage Space while Giving Flexibility

Storage space is at a premium for a lot of companies. Optimising storage for packaging materials can be a struggle.

Retention and suspension packaging helps alleviate space constraints by storing flat and helping reduce the need for void fill and cushioning materials.

With the right design, you may also be able to streamline your packaging inventory. Because the film forms around the product being packed, it is possible for one box size to accommodate multiple product sizes and shapes.

#5

It Can Be Reused to Minimise Waste

A key aspect of sustainability is waste reduction. Reusability is an area where retention and suspension boxes can unlock new opportunities to minimise waste in packaging.

This is especially effective when a shipping cycle includes returns or components are assembled in multiple facilities. Suspension packaging is an ideal choice in these scenarios. Retention packaging is also an option, but you should check with your packaging supplier to ensure the correct film is chosen.
